Workshop with Paulina Seyfried
Followed by lunch (12:00–13:00)
Cultural professionals are increasingly being called upon to address societal challenges. Their institutions are expected to serve as spaces for entertainment, education, and social interaction— or the broadest possible audience. At the same time, budgets are shrinking, and cultural policy is becoming more restrictive.
When we think about changes that can be made without budgets, we need to remember that language not only describes the world but also actively constructs it. Becoming more accessible requires clearer communication: within organisations as well as in relation to audiences. This involves questions of self-understanding, hierarchy, and transparency, as well as the words we use to describe our work. This workshop is aimed at anyone interested in questioning their academically shaped language and exploring new forms of communication.
The workshop offers the opportunity to: reflect on one’s personal and professional position collectively examine how power operates through language – particularly in the arts and cultural sector understands language not only as a barrier, but also as a way to open doors and create access.
We will talk, write, and work on texts together. Language can exclude – but it can also open doors, enable participation, and help people find their place.
What we will do:
We will begin with a check-in and a short introduction. We will then move into practical writing and translation exercises, working with plain language and experimenting with new forms of communication.
Please bring:
willingness to read a short introductory text in advance
openness to experimenting with new ways of writing and communicating, setting aside academic language
bring something, you can write with
