ANNUAL EDITIONS 22/23

The principle of the Jahresgabe belongs to the tradition of the Kunstvereine in Germany: By purchasing such a work, you not only acquire a wonderful work of art by young, emerging artists, but you also support them and the Kunstverein at the same time. This year's Jahresgaben are mainly unique pieces, including works by the artists Irina Lotarevich, Timothée Calame, Toni Schmale and Yeşim Akdeniz, who recently exhibited at the Kunstverein Bielefeld. In addition, we have invited other artistic positions that are linked to the program of Kunstverein Bielefeld, the interim director Oriane Durand and the new curatorial assistant Undine Rietz and are pleased to present the Jahresgaben by Mar García Albert, Charlie Boisson, Sequoia Scavullo, Tolia Astakhishvili, Angélique Aubrit & Ludovic Beillard, Anne Bourse, Vera Palme, Marieta Chirulescu, Lea von Wintzingerode and Maria Schumacher.

Together they form a heterogeneous group that is nevertheless united in the tension between sculpture and painting. Between painting and sculpture, readability as such is explored. The haptics and texture of a painting form a sculptural character in relief, while conversely the presentation of a sculpture on the wall can help to a painterly reception; and then there are those that exist autonomously in space and refuse to be clearly defined. In this year's selection of artists, the works trace a gentle progression from the second to the third dimension. Collectively, they question the boundaries between media or simply show how the qualities of each media can become interchangeable.
